Nooksack Valley Elementary Schools Receive HealthierUS School Challenge Bronze Award

Nooksack, Sumas, and Everson Elementary Schools are making national news by working to support and improve the health of our children and our community. As a part of their effort, healthy items are featured on their menus and physical education and other activity emphasized. Their efforts are part of the HealthierUS School Challenge.  Sponsored by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the initiative encourages all schools to take leadership in helping students to make healthier eating and physical activity choices. The HUSSC application was led by Peggy Davis, Nooksack Valley’s Food Service Director.  A team of school professionals and a representative of the parent organization participated in the application process. Special recognition is also due to the school nutrition staff for their efforts in achieving school lunch menu changes leading to a HUSSC Bronze award.

 

 

 

Nooksack Valley and Anacortes School Districts Awarded a Washington STEM Portfolio Award

 

Collaborative STEM project: Nooksack Valley and Anacortes School Districts

The relatively small Nooksack Valley and Anacortes School Districts have an ambitious goal: make sure there is a high-performing teacher in every STEM classroom capable of creating powerful learning opportunities enabling students to master the new national core science and math standards. Washington STEM’s $425,000 investment will help the two districts work together to achieve this goal.

 

The districts have a pre-existing history of working together on improving instruction. Anacortes developed a new research based teacher and principal evaluation model that was recently chosen as one of three new evaluation models for the State of Washington.  Nooksack, meanwhile, has been working hard on science and math teacher development. Washington STEM’s support will help the districts cross-pollinate the ideas and help encourage professionalization of the teaching craft.

 

The program will use multiple measures of student and staff growth in STEM classrooms as part of the teacher and principal evaluation system while providing teachers and school leaders with rich on-the-job professional development opportunities.  

 

The program is aimed at helping the districts adopt and meet the new national standards in math and science and to eliminate the achievement gap between low-income and middle-class kids. Its success will yield a model that school districts around the state and the country can use to improve STEM teaching and student achievement.
